Dr. Daley received a PhD in biology from MIT and an MD degree from Harvard Medical School through the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology. He is currently: Associate Director, Stem Cell Program at Children's Hospital Boston; Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Children's Hospital Boston; Associate Professor of Biological Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology, Harvard Medical School.
He has been elected to the American Society for Clinical Investigation, and has received research awards from Harvard Medical School, the National Institutes of Health, the New England Cancer Society, the Burroughs Wellcome Fund, the Edward Mallinckrodt, Jr. Foundation, and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of America. Dr. Daley was recently named an inaugural winner of the NIH Director's Pioneer Award, which provides a five year unrestricted grant to pursue highly innovative research.
Our laboratory is a multinational group located at Children's Hospital Boston in the Karp Family Research Laboratories. We are dedicated to the study of development, disease processes, and the improvement of therapeutics. Our projects work towards a more complete understanding of both normal and abnormal mammalian biology by building upon a foundation of basic science, involving embryonic stem (ES) cells; the development of hematopoietic tissue; germ cell specification/genomic imprint maintenance; and the mechanisms by which leukemia becomes resistant to therapy. We are currently investigating the following areas:
Pluripotent Cell Biology Hematopoiesis Cancer Therapeutics
Our team has devised methods for Directed Differentiation of ES cells into primordial germ cells and techniques for isolating and transplanting spermatagonial stem cells from testes. Using this integrated system, we have grown ES cell-derived germ cell populations into functional sperm.
Target-directed chemotherapy for chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). We have determined how Gleevecworks and how cancer cells develop resistance to the drug. Our current studies - now in clinical trials - are aimed at defining optimal combination chemotherapy regimens for averting resistance.
