Gibbons to Head Up National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute

At Morehouse, Gibbons, 55, founded and directs a cardiovascular research institute focused on areas including basic science to ethnic disparities in health. Gibbons' own lab studies how genetic variation influences vascular biology and cardiovascular disease.

He will join NIH this summer, where he will oversee a budget of $3.1 billion and the third largest of NIH's 27 institutes and centers. The institute has not had a permanent director since Elizabeth Nabel left in 2009 to head Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.
