Studies Show Improvements in Direct Skin Cell to Neurons Conversion
When the researchers tracked the transplanted cells they found they migrated to a brain region known to support the growth of neurons, where the cells then developed into three types of neural tissue: neurons, astrocytes and oligodendrocytes. Work is now under way to determine how the transplanted stem cells improved cognition.
The study was supported by grants from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine and the National Institutes of Health.
