Previous animal studies have shown that oral intake of DHA (an abundant fatty acid in the brain) reduces Alzheimer-like symptoms. But the new findings, currently published online in Cell Stem Cell, suggest that DHA may be effective only for a subset of patients.
“We believe stem cells are always trying to repair tissue, but they don’t do it well — not because we lack stem cells but, rather, the signals that regulate our stem cells are impaired,” said lead author Marc Penn, M.D., Ph.D., research director at Summa Cardiovascular Institute in Akron, Ohio.
The materials, including the biomedical implantable material polycarbonate plastic, which is a versatile plastic used in things from bulletproof windows to CDs, offer an accessible and cheaper way of culturing hESCs and present new opportunities for future medical research in this area.
In the study “REDDSTAR” (Repair of Diabetic Damage by Stromal Cell Administration), led by researchers from Queen’s Centre for Vision and Vascular Science (QCVVS), stem cells are being isolated from donors, expanded in a laboratory setting and re-delivered to patients in an attempt to repair the
At the same time the team is testing an innovative new treatment regimen designed to prevent rejection of the limbs. During the transplant procedure Marrocco was given an infusion of the donor’s bone marrow cells.
